TRUSU Chinese Students & Scholars Association (CSSA) has recently concluded a successful year of events and activities, showcasing the rich culture and heritage of Chinese to the TRU community.
The CSSA hosted a variety of events throughout the year, including a new student meeting, a national day celebration, a lecture series, a Chinese movie screening event and a Chinese Spring Festival Gala. These events provided opportunities for members to connect, learn, and celebrate together.
Event 1: New Student Meeting (held in September 2022)
The new student meeting provides incoming students with an opportunity to connect with current students, learn about Canadian culture and campus life, and receive tips for success at TRU.
The new student meeting, which took place at the beginning of the academic year, welcomed new students to the TRU community and introduced them to the CSSA team. Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the CSSA’s role on campus, as well as the various events and activities planned for the year.
Event 2: Chinese National Day Celebration (held in October 2022)
Chinese Students & Scholars Association hosted a successful national day celebration on October 1, 2022, bringing together on-campus Chinese students and the Kamloops local community to commemorate the 72nd anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
“We believe that events like this are important for promoting understanding and connection between different cultures,” said the CSSA President. “We are proud to be a part of the Kamloops community and to be able to share our culture with others.”
Event 3: Chinese Movie Screening: Home Coming (held in October 2022)
Chinese Students & Scholars Association partnered with Kamloops Cineplex to host a successful screening of the Chinese movie “Home Coming”, providing members of the Kamloops community with an opportunity to enjoy a cultural experience and learn about Chinese cinema.
The screening, which took place between October 28 and November 3 of 2022, attracted a large number of local community members, who were eager to learn more about Chinese culture and history through the medium of film. Attendees at the screening had the opportunity to enjoy the movie in a theatre setting, with state-of-the-art audio and visual equipment, as well as a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere.
Event 4: CSSA Lecture with guest speaker Donald Wilson(held in November 2022)
Every year CSSA hosts a lecture event to bring the community together and have an engaging learning experience outside the confines of the classroom. The idea of the CSSA lecture is to bring well-known speakers to the TRU campus, at little cost to the local community, to bridge misunderstandings between different cultures. The lecture event covers economic, political and cultural topics and has become a popular event among students and faculties.
This year’s lecture features guest speaker Donald Wilson, an expert in international relations and cross-cultural communication. Donald Wilson is a teacher-activist currently residing and teaching in the unceded territory of the Secwépemc people. He contends with the contradiction of being a settler-European on stolen Indigenous land while recognizing the importance of promoting societal movements towards collectivization and communication.
As an organization dedicated to promoting cross-cultural exchange and understanding, it was important for us to provide our members with an opportunity to engage in a meaningful conversation about socialism and its impact on China, and how we can work to build stronger connections between China and Canada.
Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and engage in discussion with Wilson, as well as network with fellow students and members of the community.
Event 5: Spring Festival Gala (held in January 2023)
Chinese Students & Scholars Association (CSSA) hosted a successful 2023 Spring Festival Gala celebration, attracting over 100 attendees from Kamloops and nearby communities to enjoy performances, and Chinese cuisine, and learn about Chinese culture.
The Spring Festival Gala celebration, also known as the Chinese New Year Gala, is an important traditional holiday in China, and the CSSA was thrilled to bring this celebration to Kamloops to share with the local community.
The event featured a range of performances, including Chinese folk dances, songs, and instrumental music, as well as a martial arts demonstration. Attendees also had the opportunity to sample Chinese cuisine, including dumplings and other traditional dishes.
Chinese Students & Scholars Association remains committed to promoting a diverse community and bridging cultural gaps between China and Canada. CSSA members will continue to work tirelessly towards this goal and strive to become a leading campus club that brings together students from diverse backgrounds to learn about and appreciate Chinese culture. Through a variety of events and activities, CSSA members hope to foster cross-cultural understanding and encourage dialogue between different communities. The CSSA is proud to be a part of TRU’s vibrant and inclusive community and looks forward to continuing to build connections and promote cultural exchange in the future.
